When I was 25 I was so excited to get into alternative healthcare because my art career never took off so I began a career in massage and boy….when i went out to find work all i got was evil whip cracking spa owners, sitting all day in an empty salon with no appointments showing up, lying butthead chiropractor crooks who never pay you what your worth or even on time…..never knowing if you’ll make 1000 dollars or 200 dollars a week, ridiculously expensive CEU’s, fees, tables, chairs, etc, driving 20 miles for the client who doesnt show up to the office, hurt back, hurt wrists, but all the clients complain “it’s never deep enough” gross smelly patients with hairy backs, snide comments from other therapists who view you as a threat, and an endless stream of new grads (every six months how many schools graduate a plethora of hopefuls who make the competition even more fierce) phew!! I have never made it…im going back to school for nursing…more money, more jobs

What you need to do is find some businesses and see if they will take you in for some hours to work on their employees. Both jobs I’ve worked at in the past offered that as a service to the employees. $15 per 15 mins. Just book yourself 1 day a week for different employers. The employees will enjoy it, the employers have happier employees, and you are happy.
I had thought about it, but thanks for the warning. Doesn’t sound like I want to now.
Oh, you know what you could do that is very hard to come by and much needed that uses your massage therapy background? Try becoming a lymphatic therapist. It is much less credits than becoming a nurse and has a great outlook.
I’m sorry your massage school has turned out to be such a bummer in the real world. Have you considered horse or dog massage? More and more people are finding this kind of therapy useful for their animals, and are much more appreciative too. You can look for equine and animal schools on-line, hopefully one near you…be careful tho, ask professionals in your area who they use and find out where they went to school. Some are shady, some are great! We have an awesome therapist who comes to our ranch, she charges $125-$150 per horse. We get amazing results.
just a thought. good luck
You really are better off if you start your own business. It really isn’t as hard as many think. I have been doing massage for 20 years and always worked for my self so was never disappointed like you were but that is just about the picture if you opt for jobs.
Massage therapy jobs are really just places where you can learn the ropes and then go on and start your own business.
It can be a different way if you get the support you need in building a practice and learning to take care of yourself and set boundaries. Those clients who don’t show up need to pay for your time. You need to get regular massage yourself to take care of your body.
