There are more people working as nursing aides than medical coders however the projected growth rate (by the dept of labor) is higher in medical coding. Both careers are in the stable health care industry so that is a plus and they are both projected to grow at rates which are higher than the average for all careers. Nursing Aides held about 1.5 million jobs in 2008- medical coders were at 172,500. Medical coding is projected to grow 20% between 2008 and 2018 where as nursing aides are 18%. But there are other factors to look at, like pay and if you would enjoy the job. Median hourly wages of nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants were $11.46 in May 2008 where medical coders had a median annual wage of 30,610. About 41% of nursing aides work in nursing care facilities. So you need to decide if you would rather work with numbers and bills or with sick or elderly people. All this info is found on the dept labor website:
Nursing Aides: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos327.htm
Medical Coders: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos103.htm
From what I can tell, you would need training for both types of careers. If you are unsure which direction you want to go, you can take an online demo of a medical coding course where you can see how in depth it is and how it is structured. http://careerstep.com/demo/?uid=ref10077 I don’t have a resource for nursing aides. The best I can give you is what is said about the job on the dept of labor site I linked to above.
Good luck!
