there is none… psych is a pseudo science to help people with no other skills get through college. 99 pecent of the time at least.
You are dealing with the welfare of people therefore, it’s probably a good idea to have an idea of what makes them tick in order to assist them properly.
general psychology is a great course for anyone that will be directly dealing with people to take. it gives a very general overview of personality traits, mental illnesses, brain structures and functions, etc. general psych just gives a person a better understanding of what makes people tick. since you are going into nursing, you will be dealing with people experiencing illnesses and the negative feelings that correspond with that. you will also be directly dealing with the families of your patients. this will be useful!
it will put you more in tune with your patients…their emotional state as they deal with health issues.
I think it’s also important for nurses to have some training in general psychology because of the need to understand how the mind affects the body. The course of many physical illnesses are affected by the patient’s overall emotional health and stress levels. Also, many times a person may present with a health complaint that has been caused or exacerbated by a mental health issue. So, it seems like it would be important for nurses to have a basic understanding of human emotion and mental health to best assess and treat their patients. Plus, greater insight leads to better nurse-patient interactions and higher patient satisfaction.
Listen. Psychology has no relevance at all. Just study and pass your classes. Get your license and off you go. I know many nurses. You will be doomed to being a paper and pill pusher content in the day to day, hellish drudgery of contending with belligerent, whiny, cry baby, idiot patients whom are ungrateful and can never be satisfied. They will accuse you of behavior you can not defend against because you will have no supporting witnesses in the room with you. You will have an ongoing battle to resist the temptation of trying all those mysterious pills before you in the nurses cart. You will love it as you are never respected and are the brunt of all doctor’s jokes. You will communicate with psychotic family members who want to come in and enact some tribal vengeance on the nursing staff for alleged injustices wrought on their loved ones. You will have to manage the Certified Nurses Assistant even as they fart at you from a break room and make them do the work you do not have time for because that is not your job while at the same time dodging the directives of the Director of Nursing for the same reason. Your main goal and objective throughout the shift will be to gossip with the other nurse and waste time. You may have a full code so watch out. If in doubt – send them out. There is always the potential crisis of a fire drill. During a storm the lights will go off. Don’t forget breaking up the Nursing Assistant’s constant fighting in the hallway. At anytime when you least expect it and by surprise without warning some bogus situation will occur that might threaten your nursing licence. Studying psychology has no relevance at all. Relax. Have Fun.
