Probably the most obvious is in 1-3, the story about Juliet learning to “fall on her back” when she grows up.Technically, however, she says this was her husband’s joke, and that he was a “merry man”. It’s clear that she loves retelling it, however.
Actually, I would say she is more “earthy” and “common” than specifically coarse or vulgar. The truly coarse and vulgar character is Mercutio, who tells filthy jokes and makes lewd comments through the entire play.
Here’s a few…she has some other slight quibbles and puns, but these are the most obvious ones that stand out…people often miss or forget the bawdiness of Shakespeare’s characters and the nurse is no exception…she’s obsessed with sex for one thing…
Act I. Scene 3
“A bump as big as a young cockerel’s stone” (as big as a cockerel’s testicle)
“thou wilt fall backward when thou comest to age” (fall on your back when ready for love making.)
“I would say thou hadst sucked wisdom from thy teat”
Act II, scene 5
In telling Juliet how/where to meet Romeo so they can be married…
“But you shall bear the burden soon at night” (Soon you will bear the weight of your lover.)
Act III, scene 3
(Romeo is banished, the nurse here is trying to arrange for Romeo to meet with Juliet for their wedding night and consummation of marriage etc…She mentions “an O” meaning an exclamation of sorrow…somewhat inappropriately however, the nurse here has slipped into her usual bawdy innuendo.)
Stand up, stand up! Stand, an you be a man.
For Juliet’s sake, for her sake, rise and stand!
Why should you fall into so deep an O?
Act IV, scene 5
The day Juliet is supposed to marry Paris, before finding her under the effect of the potion etc, the nurse speculates about Juliet’s wedding night with Paris as she attempts to awaken her…The nurse’s thoughts are again leaning towards the act of consummation..
“For the next night, I warrant, the County Paris hath set up his rest that you shall rest but little”
