And I wonder why? I read newborns will feed for a long time and that this should reduce over time, but my baby’s feeds are getting longer. She only fed for a few minutes at a time when she was born and for the first few weeks but now she’s feeding up to 20 minutes. I wonder if she is trying to increase supply, or is it just comfort nursing? Any ideas or links would be much appreciated – thanks!

It’s a growth spurt. Her feeding times will start to decrease within a few weeks and then you will be worried she’s not nursing enough!

More then likely a growth spurt, you will see this happen multiple times.
Both my daughters fed for 20 minutes. When bubs is newborn they drink smaller amounts. As they grow, so does there feeding amount and time. You are making sure that your baby is getting plenty of hind milk. This fills them up for longer. The initial milk is called fore milk and is watery. This will keep baby hydrated but is not very filling. By making sure your baby gets the right quantities you’ll get your baby stretching out feeds. Around 4 to 6 weeks they do have a growth spurt. Sounds like you are doing a wonderful job. You don’t want your baby developing a snack pattern. This can happen if bubs doesn’t feed long enough. If the poos start looking a greeny colour it may mean too much fore milk and not enough hind milk is being consumed. You’ll get a gassy, unsettled baby. If the poos stay a nice yellow colour it means they’re getting the right balance. Hind milk is harder for baby to drink as flow isn’t as good and the milk is thicker. Keep up the great job and it’ll get easier as bubs gets past the 3 month age. Speak to a breast feeding organisation in your area and they’ll give you the support and great tips
