Dramatic irony occurs in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet
whenever Shakespeare stages a fight scene.
when the audience knows something that the characters in the play do not.
when the friar believes he can unite the feuding families.
when Juliet is insecure about Romeo’s true feelings.
In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Juliet quickly admits her love to Romeo because
she wants to marry him.
she is sure his love is true.
she is not a flirt.
he overhears her musing about her love for him.
The purpose of the humor arising from the nurse’s comic character in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is to
furnish relief from the tragedy.
display Shakespeare’s wit.
suggest that love has its funny side.
indicate that her servants are foolish.
In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence rebukes Romeo because
Romeo is causing trouble by wooing Juliet.
Romeo is so changeable in love.
Juliet is too young to marry.
Romeo is unfaithful to Rosaline
?????
when the audience know..
irony is like a humourous contradiction – alanis morrisettes ‘ironic’ should explain this well enough – but we did sooo much on dramatic irony – so it’s definately this.
overhears..
‘romeo romeo wherefore art thou romeo’ thats said after romeo wanders off to find juliet, and tlaks to himself about her. juliet overhears and realises he loves her alot, so she wonders why he has to be montague (quote)
display or furnish
basically just humour
romeo so changeable
he ‘loved’ rosaline, then was obsessed with juliet.. Friar L thinks he’s a bit young and foolish

1. when the audience knows somthing that the characters in the play do not.
2. I think its She want’s to marry him. I come to this conclusion because one of the last things she says to him is somthing to the effect of “If you purpose is honorable marriage, great, let me know when we’re getting married, if not, leave me to my grief.” (paraphrased)
She never overhears him for sure, its he that overhears her. If she was sure that his love was true, she wouldn’t tell him to leave her to her grief if he’s just playing.
3. the nurse is true comic relief. A to furnish relief.
4. Because romeo is so changeable in love.
The friars line after hearing that Romeo digs “the fair daughter of rich capulet” is:
“Rosaline that thou did love so dear so soon forsaken!?” Then he goes on to say “Young men’s love lies then not truly in their hearts but in their eyes.”
The friar also refers to Romeo as “Young waiverer” making fun of his changeable love.
