I am a critical care pediatric nurse in a hospital and I work the night shift. I find that the people that I work with have exhilirating humor. I too find humor in almost everything and I find it hard to be serious a lot of the time. Is this our way of dealing with stress?

I believe so…yes.
The job you have is very demanding on your nerves and emotions and you need a relief valve to take the stress and pressure off. The fact that your group is able to use humor to achieve this purpose is commendable.
Intensive care and critical care are very demanding and require a nurse to be both a friend to the patient and a cold distant professional to protect her own stability. Humor helps to let off the stress this double standard creates.
i used to work in a military hospital here, and people were also like that, but when it was time to get serious, we were. i think that it is one way to deal with the stress of caring for sick people and the pressures of our jobs. sometimes people go as far as telling green jokes.
joking around helps relieve the stress.
