I hear all of my fellow classmates and peers stating “ooohhh there’s a substantial nursing shortage in America and their in serious demand.” However, I beg to differ. I’ve made several trips to various type of hospitals, clinics, and private practices, their staff have informed me that their not in need of NEW GRAD nurses, but their in serious need for EXPERIENCED nurses. All of them have stated this towards me. I truly believe it, so I’m a semester away from becoming an RN (assuming I pass the RN-NCLEX). Instead of applying to hospitals, should I join the military or peace corps to earn valuable experience under my resume? I was in the military before and it was alright. Peace Corps seems like a new approach to things.

yeah sounds about right….even now many many healthcare jobs ask for a year of acute care experience…things got alot worse for the new grad ever since economic crisis. their were all kinds of special bonuses and programs for us…but alot of that stuff was axed…even like the externship programs..bottom line…get experience where ever you can. i got hired doing pediatric home care trach and vents. im hoping a year later now that it gets me into acute..and i have been told it makes me a very good candidate. hadnt heard about the peace corps? sounds like something awesome to put on your resume and a wonderful experience!!
their really universally problems with nursing shortages tho…its supposed to get worse in the future. funny thing tho, they have passed now on several classes now of new grads in acute care..so who do you think is going to replace the retirees? once it gets crazy short again (you have many holding off on retirement or doing extra hours to make up for lost income of a spouse currently and hospitals that are tighting their belt and staffing less at the moment) then we will be back to the way it has been up until the last couple years where all you need for any job you want is a license and a pulse.
