How about the Crimean War? This is the war that gave Florence Nightingale her fame and propelled the nursing profession during wartime from an afterthought for prostitutes to a respectable profession for young ladies.

Read up about Vivien Bullwinkle and the other army nurses taken prisoner by the Japanese on the Singapore Peninsula.
I think the Vietnam war really reflected Nursing. Before then, we were just following orders, not thinking or working independently, but during Vietnam, the MASH hospitals were so busy that Nurses took over a huge role in saving lifes. They learned advance techniques, and went from followers to leaders. Do a search for Vietnam Nurses and read their stories.
