If having an acquaintance working at your doctor’s office is a concern for you, find another doctor. While the staff at the office does have access to your medical info (charts, etc), they shouldn’t be looking at it unless it directly pertains to their job and care you are receiving from them. To do otherwise is a violation of HIPAA laws. Now, if this nurse is directly involved in your care and treatment, she will be looking at your chart…so if it bothers you, I’d switch to another practice.
Im a nurse and we look at all medical history especially when the person is hard to diagnose its
always better to check past surgeries, medications and more..they provide alot of informatino. But I can understand your concern, here is a online brochure regarding HIPAA LAW OF ILLINOIS
http://ihcrp.georgetown.edu/privacy/stateguides/il/il.pdf , it will explain it more plainly..I would nicely ask the office supervisor that you wish her not to have your chart that you want someone else..
i’m a receptionist in a doctors office. i have access to ALL of the medical history that the doctor’s in our office receives for all of their patients. so if she is a nurse or a tech, then YES she will/can see it and understand what the doctor writes.
