I had back surgery Aug 07 at 19years of age. I am now 21 and have been released to go back to work and school. I believe I want to become a Registered Nurse- by getting my Bachelors degree.
Has there been other RN’s who have suffered with back problems and still pursued a Nursing degree?
(Any other advice on how to get started. I have 1 semester of community college under my belt. So I would be a freshman)
Thank you.
yes of course why not?
Yes genius.
Of course you can. As long as its not constant as in every week or month
Yes. My uncle quit his job at a mill because he needed back surgery, went back to school, and is now an RN.
Where I am, my sister had to be able to lift a certain weight. Though, I doubt that many of the nurses can do that at the local hospital, most look unfit or too old. I bet you’ll become a nurse.
yes my mother is an RN and she had surgery in her back.
I would think the you may need to reconsider how much you want to be an RN, because as some people may not know, nursing is sometimes a lot of physical work, and you have to pass that part to even get a job as an RN.
Still, I wish you the best of luck.
P.s
I’m not saying that is not possible, because it is, I’m just saying you may have to work harder than other people. So please no one take offense because of my answer.
Yes you still can become an RN if you have had back surgery or history of back problems because of the disability rights act.
To “get started” you will still need lots of training and/or schooling to get your licenses and etc. Look online at your state/county/city websites for training and future employment
Yes, you can but it’ll be more difficult though.
yes you can become a nurse even if you have had back issues and back surgery. remember though a part of nursing requires that pts be turned, lifted and assisted out of bed. so take that into consideration. this is mostly done though in a hospital or nursing home setting. you can try a clinic or doctors office instead
If you have been released by your surgeon with no restrictions, then the answer is absolutely yes. If you have restrictions, then you need to discuss this with your surgeon who performed the procedure.
Yes of course you can still go to nursing school. I have had back problems for years and have been a nurse 13 yrs. I would recommend looking into something like home health or clinic type work if your backis bothering you after you complete school and get some experience. I worked home health for 5 yrs and had a lot less problem with back pain than when I worked in the hospital. Good Luck and study hard. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!
There are certain physical requirements that you have to meet when you are applying to a nursing program (and for many nursing jobs as well). There may be lifting requirements (up to 50#s, standing on your feet for long periods of time, bending,,,,etc.) Check at the school you are interested in and see what the requirements are. You’ll have to have a physical by your MD and he’ll have to sign a paper saying you meet or don’t meet the requirements. (this is true of many nursing jobs as well).
I’m not saying you can’t become a RN due to back problems, but just check what the school requirements are, and know that there certainly maybe some restrictions.
As a RN there are many jobs I simply cant do and have to stay away from due to back problems (with most of those problems having come directly from all the years I spent at the bedside caring for patients)
good luck!
Well of course, but I would stay away from staff nursing after awhile! You definitely develop back problems, but not worry you can work with peds, neonates, ICU where most patients has tracheotomies. You have so many options! “Oh The Places You’ll Go”
