I am 15 weeks pregnant. We went yesterday to the ob. The nurse said the doctor would ask if anyone in our families had any nuero tubular diseases or downs syndrome, so I was thinking he was going to finally talk to us about our family history. I am under the assumption that every doctor does a full family history so they know what tests need to be done. But no, he didn’t even ask about what the nurse had mentioned. Just gave me a paper and said there are 5 chromosome tests that I have to go get done next week. So I asked about the family history and he said that he wasn’t planning on doing one. So what, he just throws a dart at a spinning board and what it lands on is what test I have to get done? Has anyone else in your office heard of this?

Unless he finds a reason during your pregnancy through the bloodwork…you are going through a normal pregnancy. If something is wrong then the genetic counseling will kick in…
If you feel you should have amnio tests speak up to the nurse etc…Are you high risk? That has some input on it too
They usually do. All mine they have. Maybe i would talk to your doctor or the nurse about this and just let them know.
Family history or not they have to do the tests. there is no dart board saying which tests. all women get the same exact tests done as the next pregnant woman. He should ask about the family history but not all obgyn’s do ask. if your worried talk to him if he still doesnt understand your point of view then get a diff. dr. One that you are happy with. good luck.
no – my doctor updates my each year for my yearly exam!! get a new doctor
The tests he is doing will tell him a lot more than the family history. Clearly, the nurse listed down that you had an issue and he’s following through. Think about how your appointment went. I wouldn’t stick with a doctor that was so perfunctory and not answering my questions, but sometimes I forget to ask the pertinent questions (not the doc’s fault, of course).
My doctor was the one who told ME that I am at some risk for neuro tubular problems in pregnancies. I didn’t know the dimple on my back indicates that.
I have never heard of that. I’ve been pregnant twice and each time they asked about my family history on the first visit. I think you need a new doctor. It sounds like your doctor was in a hurry and you don’t need a doctor that is going to rush you in and out like that. They should take there time and get to know you.
no, it dont sound right you should change ur ob!!
That’s odd that they didn’t at least do a basic one..I would bring up anything in your family that may be of concern but the tests will show if anything is wrong. We’ve used 4 Dr’s and all have done at least a minimal history..the specialist went a little overboard with it but I suppose that’s expected..
I thought they did. During my first appointment it was all about the questions…questions and mine & my boyfriends family history…
