I am 23, just got summoned to jury duty for the first time. Didn’t give me much of a notice; said to be there in less than two weeks! I am already scheduled to work the night of and the night before of the date they told me to be there. We are already short-staffed and I am unsure of the policy for RN’s having to go to jury duty. I know I won’t get any supplement from the hospital (I have been there less than a year) and having to be off those days will make me lose about four hundred dollars! I think it’s absurd to send people such a short notice (my schedule is flexible; could have asked for certain days off if I would have known in advance). Now I feel like I am screwed out of a decent paycheck, will be endangering the patients (I work in a pediatric intensive care unit) because I will be leaving the unit a nurse short, and am just aggravated in general.
They got my name wrong (I’m married now, have officially changed my name with the social security department, voter’s registration, license, bank account, IRS, health records, etc.). They also got my address wrong (and I’ve lived at this address for three years!). They sent it to my mother’s home, who passed it on to me.
I did read that RN’s could get out of jury duty? I filled out their little form; could I also send a copy of my nursing license, schedule, and state why I think it would be detrimental for me to serve?

If you are called for a Jury Duty, your work is required to let you go and pay you the difference between what you get paid by the system and your regular pay.
They can’t do anything about “endangering the patients” part but it would be the same thing as if you’d get sick.

I live in California and employers don’t have to pay you when you are out on Jury duty. I think the courts pays you something like 5.00 a day. Pathetic. I got out of Jury Duty because I get summoned every year. This last year, I told them I have 213,000 miles on my car and the courthouse is over 50 miles away. I was able to claim unreliable transportation.
