I’m planning on getting a nursing degree but i’m afraid i might change my mind later on down the road, say i want to switch to dentistry or doctorate, is the switch that much different (in terms of years of education)?

Yes, they are very different. They may require the same core classes, but switching in the middle of one and moving to another will cost a lot of both money and time. Choose one path to finish, then return to another if you are not satisfied. (but, at least you’ll be able to work while training for another)
