I am very interested in becoming a Nurse Practitioner. I am currently completing my Bachelor’s degree and will be applying for the MSN-FNP program next year (they accept direct entry applicants). It doesn’t seem like there are many job postings for Nurse Practitioners in the hospitals within an hour of here, though. Is it becoming difficult to find NP jobs? Will I have to be open to relocation?

yes
If you posess a degree – or any other qualification – then you’ll already be ahead of the bunch when it comes to hunting for jobs. My friend has a degree and he wasn’t certain what direction to go with it, but he discovered some excellent instruction on the site in the resource box below which helped him to settle that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is plenty of guidance on the site regarding other jobs.
good ones are hard to find
stupid ones are everywhere
try indiana for a job, health care sucks here
How about a doctor’s office or Skilled Nursing Facility?
And, just because they aren’t posting the NPs wanted sign doesn’t mean that they won’t hire you.
Yes, you will have to be open to relocation. It appears that some states in the U.S. have already caught onto the nurse practitioner idea. Canada is not catching on fast enough however. It is a great idea in my opinion. Less hypochondriacs (in the drama sense, not the cartilage below the ribs sense) filling up the emergency rooms.
Yes you will. Not all areas use NPs, and in others they may not need a NP (not a huge job turn-over in that area, many NPs stay with their jobs for years) so you will have to go where the jobs are and that may mean relocation.
Nurse Practitioners and nurses, for that matter need to be open minded about relocating for the most opportunities. Trouble is, cities where there are large teaching facilities for these programs have a glut of new health care professionals that want to stay in the area after graduation. But, there are plenty of opportunites elsewhere, especially Florida and California.
I just had a conversation with a M.D. about an hour ago about the growing shortage of primary care physicians over the coming years. She believes that FNP’s will be required to help fill these gaps.. If your ultimate goal is to stay near family, you should be able to move back to home base in a few years .
Hope I helped you.
