I am registering into college to study to be an R.N. and I also want to volunteer at my local hospitals to gain experience in the medical field and shadow other R.N.’s. Would volunteering be helpful when applying for future R.N. positions?

I dont believe hospitals will allow volunteers to shadow RN’s at the workplace. It would be a violation of HIPAA. You can volunteer to get your foot into the door. Then get hired as a certified nurse’s assistant. CNAs work with RNs to help care for the patient. CNAs sort of shadow RNs. The only way you could shadow an RN is when you are hired and become an orientee. Then you can really shadow the RN taking care of the patient.
No, you won’t be able to shadow the RN, but it will be valuable in terms of being around medical personnel. You may get a good idea of where you would like to work as well. Plus it looks good on your resume if you have volunteer experience!
